Magelusion - LOWREZJAM 2020, Menus, Audio, and Other Such Details

Audio-ooooooo

I am not good, at all with audio! Not making it, and not putting it in my games. I definitely need more practice at least in the latter part, but at this point, not sure how much I’ll be able to get into Magelusion before deadline.

That said, I do have some audio in now. Nothing special. Flame sounds for when the player casts fire. Water sounds for the water spell. I have a sound effect for the switches and gates. They’re nothing to write home about, and I took them from freesound.org… The CC0 ones for the moment.

I need to get a music system in and soon! Then I need to find some decent music! Oh the woaws!

Actually, then came together rather quickly. I first roughed one up with (Godot’s)[https://godotengine.org/] built in theme, then got to making a couple assets to build out my own. Looks pretty good for a speedy build… and I got to reuse my Fog shader to add a little motion to the menu. I’m feeling rather proud of it, actually!

I do want to get an ‘Options’ menu in there. Just something to adjust the three sound buses I’m using… ok, well, I’m only using two (Master, and SFX) at the moment, but once Music is in, then there will be a third, and I want the user to be able to adjust them as desired.

Short post

Honestly, I added so many little things… new triggers, triggerable platforms, the ability to pickup the spells instead of them being handed to you right off the bat! So many things!

Hopefully, when this Jam ends, I’ll be able to get into more detail about how and what I did. Sadly, with less than a handful of days left, most of my time is being spent getting all the final touches done in the game.

As it stands actual work is opening up again (tomorrow as I write this), and for the weekend, I have a scheduled D&D session that’s going to be four hours of my day, and family obligations on the sunday this game jam ends… GAH! I need to use all of the time I have available. That said, this may be the last post I can get in before the LOWREZJAM 2020 comes to an end.

I do promise to put up a post mortem and all the additional gifs I have some time after the jam ends! I would also like to include some posts reviewing any jam entries I’ve tried, just because :D

Well, with that said, and with my time waning, I leave you with some screenshots!!

Magelusion’s main menu, as it sits within the Godot editor! I think it looks pretty decent, even if I do say so myself!

If I release with this menu, I think I can still be mostly happy. Best menu I’ve done in Godot so far… for what that’s worth.

This one might be a bit hard to see, but it does show off triggering elements with fire, and the example element in this case being a platform!

Player spells are no longer a given! They now need to be picked up before they can be used. I cheese this with the ‘database’ system I put into the game, but I’m very happy with the results!
